WiFi’s Dark Secret: How Ordinary Routers Can Turn You into a Trackable Person
Researchers at Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) have made a disturbing discovery: ordinary WiFi networks can identify individuals with near-perfect accuracy, without the need for cameras or specialized equipment. This technology has been tested on 197 participants and identified individuals with nearly 100% accuracy, even from different angles and regardless of how they walked.
The implications are staggering. With WiFi networks already ubiquitous in homes, offices, restaurants, and public spaces, this technology has the potential to turn every router into a de facto surveillance tool. People walking past their favorite café or coffee shop may be unaware that its WiFi network is quietly tracking them – and that this information could be shared with third parties without their knowledge.
This discovery raises concerns about mass surveillance, but it also highlights the stealthy nature of WiFi-based monitoring. Unlike visible security cameras, wireless networks give people no obvious indication that their radio signals can potentially be used to recognize who is nearby. This makes WiFi-based monitoring especially pernicious.
The technology relies on the normal communications produced by legitimate users connected to a WLAN (wireless local area network). Connected devices send beamforming feedback information (BFI) back to the router to help optimize wireless communication. This BFI is transmitted without encryption, making it accessible to anyone within range. The researchers’ system analyzes this information to generate images of people from multiple viewpoints, which can then be used to determine a person’s identity.
Once the machine learning model has been trained, identification takes only a few seconds – fast enough for real-time surveillance. The researchers are particularly concerned about how such technology could be used in authoritarian countries, where it could potentially be applied to monitor protesters or other groups without the obvious infrastructure associated with conventional cameras.
They’re calling for protective measures and privacy safeguards to be incorporated into the forthcoming IEEE 802.11bf WiFi standard – a stark reminder that even seemingly innocuous technologies can pose serious risks to our fundamental rights. This discovery raises important questions about the role of technology in society, particularly when it comes to surveillance and data collection.
